How do reviewed elite firms constrain - or permit - applications across offices and roles?

The rules are not uniform. Evercore limits candidates to two applications per year and requires finalists to choose one location or position. Gibson Dunn tells law-student applicants to apply only to their first-choice office. UBS caps U.S. summer-internship candidates at three applications across divisions and U.S. offices. By contrast, Skadden explicitly says summer-associate candidates may apply to multiple offices.

Evercore

Evercore's careers FAQ states that candidates may submit up to two applications each year. If selected for a final round, the candidate must choose one location or position for which to interview and be considered. Official source · SIG-245 and SIG-246.

Gibson Dunn

Gibson Dunn's New York law-student recruiting page tells candidates to apply to their first-choice Gibson Dunn office only and says the firm does not allow interviews with multiple offices. Official source · SIG-228.

UBS

For the U.S. Summer Internship Program, UBS says a candidate may submit a maximum of three applications across all business divisions and U.S. offices during the same academic year. Official source · SIG-237.

Skadden

Skadden publishes the opposite office-access rule for its Summer Associate Program: students may apply to multiple Skadden offices. Requests by 2Ls to split the summer between two offices are considered case by case. Official source · SIG-212.

Why this matters

Application strategy is itself part of selection architecture. The reviewed firms show materially different systems: some restrict the number of applications or office routes, while another expressly permits multi-office applications. Candidates therefore should not assume one employer's office rule generalises to another.

What this does not prove

The evidence is firm- and programme-specific. It does not establish how common either restrictive or permissive office rules are across elite employers, nor whether applying to multiple offices changes an applicant's probability of selection.
