Where the line falls

Of 30 selective employers that publish a rule on candidates' use of AI, 24 allow AI help with the written application and none forbid it; 17 forbid AI in interviews and none allow it.

Full finding: counts are of the 30 employers, out of 67 checked, whose official pages address candidates' own use of AI, observed 23 September 2026. "Allowed" includes allowed with limits. "Forbidden" includes forbidden unless the employer authorises it. A purposive list, not a sample; published rules are not evidence of enforcement.

AI on the other side of the table

McKinsey & Company and KPMG UK disclose AI-mediated interview stages while restricting candidates’ own AI assistance in assessed responses. McKinsey describes an optional chatbot that checks role eligibility against predefined criteria and is reviewed by a recruiter; KPMG describes an AI avatar asking prerecorded questions, with responses scored by staff. These are different mechanisms.

What the employer’s AI actually does

The phrase “AI interviews candidates” hides different functions. These four employer statements were rechecked on 27 September 2026. They illustrate mechanisms, not prevalence; the candidate-use boundary may apply at a different stage from the employer tool.

McKinsey · optional AI-assisted interview for applicable rolesChatbot compares stated qualifications with predefined objective role criteria. KPMG UK · graduate video interviewAI avatar presents six prerecorded questions. HSBC · optional careers matching toolTool extracts skills from a CV and helps matching and discoverability. This is not described as an interview.HSBC states its AI platform makes no automated hiring decisions; its hiring team decides.Separate general guidance prohibits generated responses during live or recorded interviews. Accenture · UK careers guidanceAI can highlight how a résumé matches a posting; some assessments use AI. What "people decide" means, employer by employer

16 employers publish a statement about human oversight. The statements differ in strength; the grade is WGI's classification of the quoted wording.

What the evidence establishes

F1

36 of 67 employers checked publish an official statement on AI in selection

30 of those 36 address candidates' own use of AI; the rest disclose only the employer's own use (or non-use) of AI. By sector: law 11 of 25; banking, asset management, private equity and trading 11 of 24; consulting 5 of 8; Big Four 3 of 4.

Limit The check list is purposive, not a sample. The counts describe this list only.

Quote this 36 of 67 selective employers checked publish an official statement on AI in selection (Hassan Akram, Who Gets In? AI Rules Tracker, official employer pages, observed 23 September 2026).

F2

The common rule is a boundary, not a ban

24 permit some AI help with application materials. 18 prohibit AI in at least one online test or interview. 14 do both: McKinsey & Company, UBS, Clifford Chance, Deloitte UK, HSBC, Macquarie Group, BlackRock, Nomura, Bain & Company, Accenture, UK Civil Service Fast Stream, Bank of England, Norton Rose Fulbright and Bird & Bird.

Limit A prohibition at one stage is not a prohibition at every stage. Stage coverage differs by institution (see the matrix).

Quote this Of 36 employers with an official statement, 24 permit some AI help with applications and 18 prohibit AI in at least one online test or interview (Hassan Akram, Who Gets In? AI Rules Tracker, official employer pages, observed 23 September 2026).

F3

No employer in the register allows unrestricted AI in interviews

0 of 36 permit unrestricted AI in interviews. Where candidate AI is built into an assessment, it is confined to a named stage, programme or role: Clifford Chance, Deloitte UK, BlackRock and Amazon (4). McKinsey's prohibition carries an 'unless specifically permitted' exception.

Limit Press reports of AI-assisted case interviews (for example at McKinsey) are not counted unless an official page states them.

Quote this None of 36 employers with an official statement permits unrestricted AI in interviews (Hassan Akram, Who Gets In? AI Rules Tracker, official employer pages, observed 23 September 2026).

F4

The rules run both ways, and not symmetrically

11 disclose that the employer itself uses AI somewhere in selection, from AI-scored coding tests to an AI-avatar video interviewer. 6 state they do not use AI to screen or assess candidates (PwC UK, Clifford Chance, A&O Shearman, BNP Paribas, Teach First and Unilever). 4 both prohibit candidate AI at a test or interview stage and disclose employer AI somewhere in hiring: McKinsey & Company, HSBC, Accenture and KPMG UK.

Limit The candidate restriction and employer AI disclosure may concern different stages and mechanisms. Disclosure is not measured use; silence is not proof of absence.

Quote this 11 of 36 employers with an official statement disclose using AI in their own selection process (Hassan Akram, Who Gets In? AI Rules Tracker, official employer pages, observed 23 September 2026).

F5

People decide, as stated

16 state that people, not AI, make or check hiring decisions. The claim that AI filters out most graduate applications before a person sees them is not supported by what these 36 institutions publish.

Limit These are institutional statements. WGI has not audited practice, and published statements cannot verify it.

Quote this 16 of 36 employers with an official statement publish a statement about human oversight of hiring decisions; the statements differ in strength (Hassan Akram, Who Gets In? AI Rules Tracker, official employer pages, observed 23 September 2026).

F6

Silence is common at the top of the market

No official public statement was located for 31 of 67, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorganChase, Morgan Stanley, Linklaters and Freshfields, and every private-equity, hedge-fund and trading firm checked (Blackstone, KKR, Bridgewater, Citadel, Jane Street). Goldman Sachs' interview rule is known publicly only from 2025 press reports of a candidate email.

Limit "Not located" means not found on public official pages on the observation date. Rules may be given to candidates privately, in portals or by email.

Quote this No official public statement on AI in selection was located for 31 of 67 selective employers checked; this does not mean they have no policy (Hassan Akram, Who Gets In? AI Rules Tracker, official employer pages, observed 23 September 2026).

Stage by stage: what each employer says

Codes describe what the official page states. "Not stated" means the pages reviewed are silent on that stage, not that AI is allowed there.

Not located on public official pages on 23 September 2026. This is not evidence that no policy exists; employers may brief candidates privately.

What changed since version 1.0

WGI re-observed the eight institutions in version 1.0 (first observed 9 to 19 September 2026) on 23 September 2026. No policy change was verified in that window. One official page moved (A&O Shearman's London FAQ). Two version 1.0 codings were corrected (BCG's own AI uses were broader than coded; Clifford Chance's human-review wording is conditional on passing the online assessments). A two-to-fourteen-day window is too short to expect change; the value of this baseline is the next re-observation.

InstitutionFirst observationRe-observationResult
McKinsey & Company2026-09-192026-09-23Same. Preparation encouraged; AI in assessments prohibited unless specifically permitted; real-time AI answers in interviews prohibited; AI-assisted interview notice effective 1 Aug 2026 unchanged.
UBS2026-09-092026-09-23Same. AI FAQ wording identical to the 9 Sep 2026 source record passages (SRC-033). The 'our people are the ones making decisions' statement sits on the early-careers page (SRC-032) and was not re-observed on 23 Sep.
PwC UK2026-09-192026-09-23Same. Assessment-response AI rule and 'we do not use AI to assess candidate performance' statement unchanged.
Clifford Chance2026-09-192026-09-23Coding corrected. Version 1.0 recorded 'the team reads every application'. The page states review by a member of the team once the online assessments are passed, and 'we do not use AI to screen applications or make hiring decisions'. Not evidenced as a policy change.
Deloitte UK2026-09-192026-09-23Same. Online assessments (Immersive Online Assessment, Onestop, Job Simulation) and interviews without AI; GenAI permitted for the final-stage research task.
HSBC2026-09-192026-09-23Same. Source for the employer statement located: Career site FAQs ('the AI-based platform does not make any automated decisions').
BCG2026-09-192026-09-23Coding corrected. Responsible-AI page lists AI-assisted screening tools and talent sourcing as well as job recommendations and question drafting. Whether new or previously under-coded cannot be established.

Watch list (secondary reports awaiting an official source)

Method

Question. What do selective employers in banking, law, consulting and prestigious UK graduate schemes officially tell candidates about using AI at each selection stage, and what do they disclose about their own use of AI in selection?

Unit. institution x market/programme scope x selection stage x observation date.

Included. Institution appears in the WGI check list; statement published on the institution's own domain, official careers site, or firm-operated application portal; statement addresses candidate AI use or the employer's AI use in selection.

Excluded. Press reports, vendor case studies, coaching and test-prep sites, forum posts (recorded as secondary leads only). Group-level AI ethics statements not specific to recruitment.

Denominator. The check list is a purposive list of well-known selective employers, not a random or complete sample. Counts describe this list only and are not prevalence estimates.

Verification. Independent pass: each quote tested against document text in a live Chrome session, 23 Sep 2026; 4 near-matches corrected in v1.0 (typo retained with [sic], clause joins and truncations fixed).

Source classes. A: official candidate guidance or employer disclosure on a careers page. B: official privacy notice or newsroom article. Secondary reporting is listed on the watch list and never counted.

What this does not show

Questions this tracker answers

Do employers allow AI in applications but not in interviews?

Among employers that publish a rule, yes.

Of 30 selective employers that publish a rule on candidates' use of AI, 24 allow AI help with the written application and none forbid it; 17 forbid AI in interviews and none allow it. (Who Gets In? AI Rules Tracker, official employer pages, observed 23 September 2026; 30 of 67 employers checked publish a candidate AI rule.)

Do any employers use an AI interviewer?

Yes.

McKinsey & Company and KPMG UK disclose different AI-mediated interview mechanisms alongside restrictions on candidate AI: McKinsey describes an optional eligibility chatbot with recruiter review; KPMG describes an AI avatar asking prerecorded questions scored by staff (official pages, observed 23 September 2026).

What does "people make the decision" mean in employer AI statements?

It means different things at different employers.

16 of 36 employers with an official statement publish a statement about human oversight, but the statements differ: some say people make the decision, some say a person reviews AI output or recorded answers, one applies a human-set pass mark to an AI score, and some say only that AI supports human judgement. Who Gets In? grades each statement on the tracker page with the employer's own wording.

Can candidates use AI when applying to elite employers?

Usually for preparation and polishing, rarely for assessed work.

Of 36 employers with an official statement, 24 permit some AI help with application materials and 18 prohibit it in at least one online test or interview (Who Gets In? AI Rules Tracker, observed 23 September 2026).

Which employers allow AI in applications but ban it in assessments?

14 employers, on their official pages.

McKinsey & Company, UBS, Clifford Chance, Deloitte UK, HSBC, Macquarie Group, BlackRock, Nomura, Bain & Company, Accenture, UK Civil Service Fast Stream, Bank of England, Norton Rose Fulbright and Bird & Bird, on their official pages as observed on 23 September 2026. Stage coverage differs by employer.

Do elite employers use AI to screen graduate applications?

Some disclose AI use and some state they do not.

11 of 36 disclose AI somewhere in selection; 6 state they do not use AI to screen or assess; 16 state that people make or check decisions. These are statements, not audited practice.

Do Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley publish AI rules for candidates?

No official public statement was located for any of the three on 23 September 2026.

Goldman Sachs' interview rule is reported only in 2025 press coverage of a candidate email.

How has AI policy in graduate recruitment changed?

No verified policy change in the first re-observation window.

WGI re-observed its first eight institutions between 13 to 19 September and 23 September 2026 and found no verified policy change in that window. Dated official items in the register run from November 2025 (Bank of England) to August 2026 (McKinsey AI-assisted interview notice). Earlier states are not reconstructed without an archived primary source.
